LAMINAR CABINETS - EXPLANATION OF THE CONCEPT, BASICS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Laminar cabinets are equipment designed for activities where it is necessary to protect the working environment or the processed product from particulate or even biological contamination. The basic principle is the use of laminar air flow and high-efficiency filtration. Laminar air flow ensures uniform circulation of the processed product through the filtered air. Filtration is provided by high-efficiency filters with an efficiency of at least 99.995%, which corresponds to filter class H13. We use H14 filtration within our facilities, which we consider to be the most suitable solution in terms of both protection and operating costs. In order to use the maximum sorption of the filter, i.e. their usable capacity, it is advisable to use fans with a powerful motor. The noise level of the laminar box is related to the fan power and its quality. By using high quality, very powerful fans, with electronic response, with the possibility of working in 24/7 mode, we achieve a very low noise level, with maximum use of the sorption capacity of the filters and low power consumption. These high-end devices include e.g. FBB, FBB-IVF.
If a product or substance is processed that is potentially hazardous, microbiological safety boxes according to EN 12469 are used. Potentially hazardous materials or activities include the processing of blood, biological samples, chemicals, tissues, cells, etc. A microbiological safety box is also known as a biohazard. Compared to the classical laminar box, it protects not only the actual material being processed but also the surroundings from its possible influence. All the air that comes out of the working area of the plant passes through a high-efficiency exhaust filter. As with the laminar box, noise, vibration, operating costs, and other parameters are dependent on the quality and sizing of the technical and work area, the high-efficiency filter, the fan, and the control system. The EN 12469 standard divides the boxes into three categories (A, B, C) according to their efficiency in terms of tightness, cleanability and sterilizability. The MBB microbiological box and the MBB-IVF received the highest marks in all categories. This is mainly due to the perfect design and innovative solutions. Technological highlights include, for example, the windscreen control, which ensures safe working, the possibility of inserting large objects into the working area and the safe cleaning of the complete glass surface.
Special types for work environment protection are devices covering larger areas, e.g. covering process lines. The modular FBB-Portal system is used for this purpose. In many cases, this solution is more economically advantageous than the implementation of a classic cleanroom. The size of the working area and space is decided according to the need. A combination of laminar and turbulent flow is often used in these installations.
Nowadays, it is highly advisable to use a modern control system for these critical devices, such as the CR2000 used in our facilities. The modern control system should ensure autonomous setting and monitoring of operating parameters, warning of malfunctions, timely notification of impending non-compliant conditions such as the impending need to replace filters, etc. In terms of full control of the plant and minimising downtime, today's plants should have remote access capability. This allows both remote control and remote servicing. The advantages of using today's modern technology include the possibility of flexible response to new requirements of supervisory authorities, quality management and, of course, the addition of new functions that increase productivity and simplify operation. These requirements are addressed by the ability to update firmware. This is one of the most important conditions for ensuring sustainability, alongside the use of quality technology, quality materials, quality construction and a responsible business policy, and our equipment fully meets these conditions.
